2016 30 in 30 - Day 30

Last day of the challenge today!  I have been working all day so far on a 40"x40" commission piece in encaustic (with glass and shell pieces).  This is part of my work in progress...

I'm tired and thirsty and just might deserve to have a cold beer now.

2016 30 in 30 - Day 28

Finished up an encaustic piece that I've been working on. Hopefully I can get a better photo in the daylight today.

Update...now available at Koyman Gallery (free shipping in continental North America).

2016 30 in 30 - Day 27

I'm enjoying the change of pace from old buildings.  In case I didn't mention before, all of my oil and acrylic paintings are done with a palette knife.

2016 30 in 30 - Day 24

I fixed a few things on yesterday's painting but still not thrilled.

2016 30 in 30 - Day 23

Phew...just getting this one in under the wire but this painting needs some work (or maybe a complete redo).  The doorway needs to come over to the left more and I need to tone down the lightness of the wall to the left of the door. I will repost when/if I work on it more.

2016 30 in 30 - Day 22

Leo's place...a closer view.  I'm starting to feel like a stalker...lol...just so many good things to paint across the road!
A Closer Look - 8"x8" oil on canvas.
Note that I really don't like the texture of canvas for my palette knife paintings so I mix about 2 parts GOLDEN light molding paste with 1 part GOLDEN gesso and a little squirt of transparent yellow iron oxide fluid acrylic and spread it over my panel and let it dry before I paint.  I find that if I just use gesso, it doesn't really get rid of the texture.  Sometimes I attach cotton muslin to a wood panel using gel medium and then coat with gesso for a larger piece.  The muslin is much finer than canvas but gives a tiny bit of texture.

2016 30 in 30 - Day 17

More limited palette and tools.  At first the building went all the way across but it seemed to need cutting off and there was no foliage above the building.  Being on the road is make these few days a little tougher but so far so good.  I'm not used to oils so I have to figure out how to get these wet paintings home. Wish I had a pizza box or something.

2016 30 in 30 - Day 16

Very limited palette on this one and playing with lost and found edges.  A certain moodiness to this one I think.

2016 30 in 30 - Day 15

1/2 way through the challenge!

I painted this one over an old painting that I didn't really like.  This is the view of my neighbor's farm house.

2016 30 in 30 - Day 14

This one originally had a whiter and bluer sky but I decided to try a very light warm yellow glaze thinking back to having seen a painting by T. Allen Lawson.

2016 30 in 30 - Day 13

Finished up this one that I started with the last fantasy seascape.  I cant decide if this should go dark side up or dark side down:

2016 30 in 30 - Day 12

This is the same location as days 5,6 and 9 only from the other end of the building.  I think I could paint this location for the entire month.

2016 30 in 30 Day 9

Ok, finally something I'm pretty happy with.  This is once again the same Google street view location in Scotland.  This one spot has endless possibilities.

"Lived In" - 8 x 8 Oil on canvas panel
Also, I didn't like parts of day 5 so I did some mods to it:

2016 30 in 30 - Day 7

In my first version of this, I liked the colors but I thought the building should be flatter.  I might have to do a 3rd version!

2016 30 in 30 - Day 6

Same building...different view...
I'm sure I'll get the hang of these oil paints at some point!

2016 30 in 30 - Day 4

I'm feeling a little better out this one.  The oil sketching method I was trying was good and I used it in the under-painting of this one, but you know what...I LIKE thick paint and texture and had more fun painting this one with my palette knives that were not with me when I was away. The reference for this was another Google Street View from Ecuador.  Below is the reference that was used for an initial sketch before putting it away for the rest of the painting, and obviously, some artistic license was used in not putting in the background buildings.

30 in 30 challenge - day 3

Back home now and back to my encaustic paints...sure did miss them.  I'm going to try not to paint my "usual"  too much for this challenge, but when short on time it's good to be able to get something down.
